Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
Our vision for children with special educational needs and disabilities is the same as for all children and young people – that they achieve well in their early years, at school and in college, and lead happy and fulfilled lives.
(Special educational needs and disability code of practice: 0 to 25 years, Jan 2015)
Our school is inclusive by design. Quality first teaching that meets the needs of all pupils is our priority. Should a child need further support, we initially aim to give this within the classroom ensuring that all children have full, unimpeded access to our tried and tested, broad and balanced curriculum.
We do recognise that sometimes children have specific needs that can only be met through an additional intervention. We aim to keep these interventions as short as possible to have maximum impact on learning while not disadvantaging children by removing them from the classroom thereby missing parts of the curriculum.
Our whole-school provision maps also identify the organisations school will seek further support from when necessary. When this expert advice is sought, we will use their recommendations to inform our IEPs (Individual Educational Plans).

SEND - Local Offer
All North Yorkshire maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND.) They are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, whatever their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. The Local Authority publishes its Local Offer which provides information for children and young people with special educational needs (SEND) and their parents or carers in a single place.
