Intent

Curriculum design, coverage and appropriateness

We strive to deliver high-quality Physical Education that enables pupils to be physically active, develop competence across a broad range of physical activities, and engage in competitive sport within a safe, supportive and challenging environment.

Our intent is for pupils to:

  • Enjoy being physically active and develop the confidence to participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities.
  • Practise and refine skills across a range of activities, developing high expectations of themselves when performing individually, in small groups and as part of a team.
  • Develop high levels of physical fitness through sustained periods of physical activity.
  • Understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and good nutrition.
  • Become advocates for PE and confidently speak about their achievements and experiences.

Implementation

Curriculum delivery

Teaching (pedagogy)

Assessment (formative and summative)

This is implemented by:

  • In EYFS, providing a wide range of opportunities for children to develop both gross and fine motor skills.
  • Supporting children to develop large-scale movements through outdoor activities such as building, running, jumping and carrying, while also developing fine motor skills through small-world play and construction activities. A sports coach further supports the development of specific skills through activities such as football, basketball, cricket and multi-skills.
  • Using an effective long-term plan that ensures pupils have access to a broad range of physical activities.
  • Delivering high-quality planning that promotes consistency in teaching and learning across the school and provides appropriate challenge for all pupils.
  • Investing in the School Sports Partnership to enable all pupils to participate in competitions and festivals with local schools.
  • Providing swimming lessons for all children from Reception onwards.
  • Offering a half-term of cycling lessons for all pupils, alongside Bikeability training for Years 5 and 6, to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to ride safely on the road.
  • Investing in specialist PE teachers who work alongside school staff, enhancing curriculum delivery and supporting teachers to continually develop their subject knowledge and pedagogical skills.

Impact

Attainment and progress (including national tests and assessments)

The impact of our PE approach is:

  • Children make strong progress in PE and enjoy participating in a wide range of sports and physical activities.
  • The profile of PE and school sport is high across the school and achievements are regularly celebrated and recognised.
  • Teachers demonstrate increasing confidence and subject knowledge when delivering high-quality PE lessons.
  • Pupils talk confidently about PE, demonstrating enthusiasm for the subject and an understanding of their learning.
  • Pupils successfully represent the school in a range of School Sports Partnership events and competitions. Despite our small cohort sizes, our pupils regularly achieve success, including the Year 3/4 cricket team winning the local competition in Summer 2025 and the basketball team reaching the final in Spring 2026.
  • 100% of Year 6 pupils leave Lealholm able to meet or exceed the Department for Education's expected standard in swimming, being able to swim at least 25 metres confidently, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
  • Pupils develop the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to lead healthy, active lifestyles both now and in the future.
